As someone who is just discovering the wonderful world of Mr. McManus, I'd like to know if Rhino plans to release ALL of the albums as 2-disc CD sets? 3 were released this past week (My Aim Is True, Spike, and All This Useless Beauty) and 3 more will be released on November 6 (This Year's Model, Blood & Chocolate and Brutal Youth.)
The Rhino press release says:

So it is with great excitement and pride that Rhino Entertainment announces that it will be releasing the entire Elvis Costello catalog in upgraded and expanded versions.

but I didn't know if this meant ALL of them. Anything Rhino's going to release, I'm going to hold off on buying.

I believe "entire" implies "all." If you don't already own the Ryko versions and really want all the bonus tracks then wait for the Rhino versions.

All his main albums will be re-released as 2-disc sets. I believe side projects like Painted From Memory (w/ Burt Bacharach), Deep Dead Blue (w/ Bill Frisell) and Costello & Nieve will not be reissued.
Speaking of Costello, as soon as I can get my hands on the new Spike, expect in-depth reviews of the 3 new re-reissues.

I really like the Rhino versions of these records-- the sound is marginally better but the extra tracks and liner notes are excellent.

Upgrading from the WB records -- Spike, Brutal Youth and eventually Mighty Like a Rose, The Juliet Letters and Kojak Variety -- is a no-brainer with the vastly improved sound and extra tracks, but moving up from the Rykodisc versions is more problematic, though the as-yet excellent quality of these issues have pushed

the matter over the top for me.

What chaps my hide this time out is the fact that, at least with "Blood & Chocolate," some of the bonus tracks from the Rykodisc version are NOT on the new Rhino 2-disc version-- which makes no sense to me whatsoever. The tracks are the studio version of "Forgive Her Anything" (only the demo version is to be included) and "A Town Called Big Nothing (Really Big Nothing" (as well as its follow-up, Track 18 "Return To Big Nothing") from the movie "Straight To Hell."

What the hell? This is like having to buy both the Criterion and MGM versions of "This is Spinal Tap," but as Rhino is now the direct licensor of the EC catalog, it makes no sense that all of the bonus tracks from the earlier release aren't on this. It's one thing to upgrade -- and sell the older versions off -- but another to have to hold on to two separate versions of the same bloody record just to get those few tracks. I'm writing this with the same vitriol as some of those posting to that crazy "1776" thread in Software.

Anyone have any further/additional news on this? Kevin, do you know?

Well, I think one of the final Costello/Rhino reissues will be of Taking Liberties. For those not familiar, TL was a compilation of outtakes, b-sides and rarities (all of which were later included on the Ryko reissues). So there's three possibilities:
1) Perhaps the two "Big Nothing" tracks and "Forgive Her Anything" will be put on the Rhino Taking Liberties, along with EC's many soundtrack contributions and collaborative one-off tracks?
2) Some kind of licensing problem.
3) Costello doesn't want it on there for some reason.
I'm hoping for reason #1.

Quite a few of the "exclusive" tracks have already been released on various cd singles, so they are not exactly "exclusive". I could let it slide if they were referring to official full length album releases, but that theory won't float either. Leave My Kitten Alone , Pour Water On A Drowning Man , and Running Out Of Fools were all released on Kojak Variety . Not exclusive by any stretch of the imagination. Don't get me wrong- I am incredibly excited about these reissues. Hell, this will be the third repurchase on most of these and on a couple, the fourth (had to spring for the Ryko gold versions of Imperial Bedroom and King Of America as well as thier standard issue counterparts). Just a stickler for the details I guess. I find it hard to believe that a web site dedicated to all things Costello would overlook these glaring inaccuracies.
Having successfully vented my spleen, my last comment is:
Bring on the rest of the reissues!

They are exclusive actually. The above bonus tracks on B&C are early versions cut in the mid-eighties.

EDIT: And the reason I marked certain tracks as "exclusive" (even though they weren't) is because they didn't appear on compilations or the Ryko reissues. CD singles and bootlegs don't count.

I hope you're right, Kevin; my only concern was that there was no odds-and-sods-style compilation from Ryko. I'm going to hold on to my Ryko Blood & Chocolate regardless.

TBA 2003 Wave 6 - GCW (Goodbye Cruel World), MLAR (Mighty Like a Rose)

TBA 2003 Wave 7 - TJL (The Juliet Letter).

I'm willing to bet Wave 5 gets pushed back to 2003.

And does anyone know if the rest of the Ramones catalog is to be released/reissued by Rhino as well?

Well, that clears up that confusion- thanks for the link. However, an "alternate take" disclaimer should follow the titles in the track listing to placate anal geeks like myself. (that just sounds nasty)
Regarding cd singles- as they were officially released by the labels, they certainly should be counted. They were available for purchase in the bins of your local record shop right along with the full length albums. In any event, it will be nice to have these in a cohesive collection. Is it February 19th yet?

Update:
On 11/19, Rhino will reissue "Armed Forces," "Imperial Bedroom" and "Mighty Like A Rose," all with more bonus tracks than you can shake a stick at:

The only discrepancy seems to be on "Imperial Bedroom," the Ryko version of which has the studio version of "Seconds To Pleasure" as a bonus track, whereas the Rhino version uses the demo.
Should be great.

Well, today I received my 2 disc versions of Elvis Costello's Trust and Get Happy!.
I got them from www.sirendisc.com
They are on Edsel Records imported from the U.K.
WTF is going on? I cannot find any info on Rhino releases of these discs.
